On May 4, 2016, SportPort™ CEO, Kim Highfield, had the privilege of attending the Environmental Working Group’s 7th Annual Earth Dinner in San Francisco. With guest speaker, Michele Pfeiffer, there was much to be discussed in terms of cancer awareness. SportPort™ has been a steadfast supporter of EWG and stands behind their mission to raise awareness of public health issues. I followed up with Kim to see what she could share with us about EWG.
Casey: How is EWG educating the public in regards to cancer awareness and prevention?
Kim: EWG always stays up to date on the latest evidence-based studies and are at the forefront to spread this information to the public. For instance they broke down the latest study determining the dangers of cell phone use in their article, Making Sense of the New Reports on Cell Phones and Cancer.
Casey: What are the other major focuses for EWG regarding cancer awareness right now?
Kim: EWG always has major public health interests at the forefront. There program interests are toxics, food, agriculture, children’s health, energy, and water.
Casey: What does their strategic plan involve moving forward?
Kim: They are advocating for a healthier world while motivating consumers to demand better policies and actively advancing environmental science.
Casey: What was the most valuable takeaway from the dinner and how will you help advocate this message for EWG moving forward?
Kim: The wealth of information was amazing and it definitely motivated me to continue to affect change in any way I can and continue my commitment to supporting EWG and their mission. It was pointed out that if humans are the ones creating toxicity in our environment then we are the ones who have the power to remove it. I believe this is something everyone needs to understand and advocate for the future of our environment.
