For Kim Highfield, founder and CEO of SportPort,™ developing a line of functional, fashionable and protective sports compression garments was more than just a business venture. The creation of this product line stemmed from Kim’s personal pursuit of a healthy, active lifestyle after witnessing loved ones struggle with cancer.
Not only did she want to avoid risk factors for cancer in her own life, she was motivated to help raise awareness of these risks. Kim was particularly struck by the dangers we expose ourselves to daily through our cell phone use and she realized that the majority of the population was unaware of the risk they are exposing themselves to. This was an area she felt compelled to do something about and it led her to developing a line of sports compression garments and to where SportPort™ is today as 2015 comes to a successful end.
Sports Compression Garments: Research, Technology Development, and Product Trials
Several years of research, technology development, and product trials finally culminated in 2015 for SportPort™ Active with their first line of innovative athletic apparel being brought to the public. Appropriately, the Shopping Cart went live on SportPortActive.com in October of 2015 during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with 10% of proceeds from pink products sold donated to The Cancer Research Institute. The first three products to show showcase the accessible cell phone pocket with patented technology forming a protective barrier between the wearer’s body and EMF emissions from their phone were the Zephyr Tank, Apex Sports Bra, and the Vertex Armband. The launching of the shopping cart brought this product straight to consumers, but the goal for SportPort™ in 2015 was to reach people in a different way.
Cancer Prevention and Awareness
Kim’s goal has never been to just sell someone a sports bra, she wants people to know the risks they expose themselves to and to understand why products like hers can be life-saving tools. The mission behind SportPort™ is cancer awareness and prevention which includes living a healthy, active lifestyle and reducing exposure to unnecessary risks. This is what drives SportPort™ forward and is the message they hope consumers walk away with. Hosting a booth in Austin, Texas at The Running Event allowed Kim and the SportPort™ team to meet retailers and other vendors, acquainting themselves with the running community. It was apparent that Kim had created her own specific niche in the gigantic world of active clothing by bringing such an innovative and protective idea to life.
A Look Into 2016
The beginning of a partnership for SportPort™ began in 2015 with The Balancing Act, a Lifetime Television Network morning show that focuses on the busy, active, health-focused woman and looking forward into 2016, the year is filled with exciting new developments to come. Kim will be featured on The Balancing Act to help raise awareness of EMF dangers and share with the busy, health-oriented viewers her athletic line that will make their lives easier and safer. Modern Living with Kathy Ireland has also invited Kim to be a guest, representing SportPort™. Modern Living is an informative program for the active woman that focuses on health and fitness while featuring the hottest stories, trends, and breakthroughs, so SportPort™ being featured is an exciting opportunity for the company to share their mission.
Product design and development continues for SportPort™ into the New Year, bringing with it the hottest colors, styles, and fabrics to expand the sports compression garment line and branching out to cover a wider range of athletes. A sneak peek of what you will see new from SportPort™ in 2016 includes the ultra-lightweight Capstone Tennis Dress, Tri-Kini Compression Bottoms, Acme Mesh Shorts in two-ply thin mesh fabric, and Laden Athletic Pants featuring two cargo pockets. Additionally, SportPort™ will introduce the Pinnacle Sports Bra designed for the fuller-busted active woman.
