Some brands begin with a trend.

SportPort Active began with a question:

How can women move safely, powerfully, and confidently in a world where technology now lives against the body?

For founder and inventor Kim Highfield, that question was deeply personal.

Kim’s relationship with health changed forever when her mother passed away from breast cancer when Kim was just 25 years old. Losing her mother so young reshaped the way she saw her body, her future, and the daily choices that support long-term wellness.

Kim had already been active in her late teens and early twenties—lifting weights, running, and staying fit—but after her mother’s passing, health became more than a lifestyle. It became a lifelong commitment. 

She began eating cleaner, training more intentionally, and reading everything she could about nutrition, exercise, disease prevention, and women’s health.

That pursuit of knowledge eventually became the foundation of SportPort Active.


The Moment That Sparked the Invention

In the early 2000s, cell phones became part of daily life. Women were no longer just carrying phones in handbags; they were running with them, commuting with them, and tucking them into the easiest available place during workouts: their sports bras.

Kim was doing it too.

As a runner, she understood the convenience. A sports bra felt like the obvious storage solution—until it didn’t.

Around that time, Kim began noticing medical articles and case reports discussing unusual tumor locations in young, otherwise healthy women. One case series published in 2013 described breast cancers in young women who reported prolonged direct contact between their breasts and cellular phones; importantly, case reports like these do not prove causation, but they did raise questions about a real behavior many women had adopted: carrying phones directly against breast tissue during daily life and exercise. 

That was the turning point.

Kim did not build SportPort Active from fear. She built it from awareness, precaution, and a refusal to ignore what women were actually doing.

A Careful Note on Cell Phones, EMF & Health

The science around cell phones and cancer is complex, and we believe women deserve honest, balanced information.

The National Cancer Institute states that cell phones emit radiofrequency radiation, a type of non-ionizing radiation, and that evidence to date suggests cell phone use does not cause brain or other cancers in humans. Although, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also states that the weight of scientific evidence has not linked cell phone radiofrequency radiation with health problems. Interesting enough, there is evidence in other countries were scientists link tumors to cellular radiation.

At the same time, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” in 2011, noting that continued study was warranted.  More recently, a WHO-commissioned systematic review led by ARPANSA reported no association between mobile phone use and head cancers based on a large review of studies published from 1994 to 2022. The FDA has since passed a law that all cellular companies have to disclose the dangers around cellular use and are carcinogenic.

So where does SportPort Active stand?

SportPort Active did not appear overnight.

Kim spent years researching EMF shielding, garment construction, compression textiles, women’s anatomy, and athletic function. Early attempts failed. Prototypes were rebuilt. Pocket placement was refined. Fabric behavior was studied. Fit was tested under real motion.

The goal was never to simply “add a pocket.”

The goal was to engineer a pocket that was:

After nearly a decade of self-directed research and formal development, Kim turned the concept into protected innovation. SportPort Active notes that Kim Highfield holds two issued U.S. patents in women’s performance apparel: U.S. Patent No. 8,898,816, “Women’s Sports Top with Integrated Pocket Assembly,” and U.S. Patent No. 9,362,618, “Radio Frequency Shielded Clothing.” 

The radio frequency shielded clothing patent describes a garment pocket with an inner panel containing electrically conductive shielding designed to shield a portion of the wearer from radiofrequency energy related to an electronic device carried in the pocket.
