Assess Your Fitness Level and Set Goals - Before resuming your running routine, it's essential to assess your access your current fitness level and set realistic goals. Engage in light cardio exercises or brisk walks to gauge your endurance and overall fitness. This self-assessment will help you tailor your training program accordingly and prevent overexertion.  

Embrace Walk-Run Intervals for a Gradual Return - To ease back into running, embrace the power of walk-run intervals. Begin with a warm-up walk, followed by short bursts of jogging. Gradually increase the duration of your running intervals while maintaining a comfortable pace. This approach conditions your body and builds endurance without overwhelming your muscles and joints.

Principles behind Run Walk Run:

  • Continuous use of a muscle will result in quicker fatigue
  • The longer the run segment, the more fatigue
  • Run Walk Run is a form of interval training
  • Conservation of resources
  • Quicker recovery
  • Less stress on the “weak links”

Prioritize Proper Form and Technique

Maintaining proper running form is vital for injury prevention and optimal performance. Focus on an upright posture, engage your core, and land mid-foot with each step. Coach Galloway also advises listening to your body and taking rest days to allow for recovery and adaptation. Jeff goes on to say, “Running form mistakes can aggravate injuries. The most efficient and gentle running form is a “shuffle.” The feet stay next to the ground, touching lightly with a relatively short stride. When running at the most relaxed range of shuffling motion, the ankle mechanism does a great deal of the work, and little effort is required from the calf muscle. When the bounce off the ground increases, the foot pushes harder and the stride gets longer, there are more aches, pains, and injuries.” He is of the belief that one should run in what feels natural to them.

What to wear as it gets colder (in Fahrenheit)

60° +:  Tank top, women's sports bra, shrug top or maximum support sports bra, tee top and athletic shorts or athletic stretch running skort

50-59°:  Sleeveless hoodie tank top, maximum support sports bra and shorts.

40-49°:  Athletic stretch long sleeve top, layered with sleeveless Polartec hoodie top, shorts or women's leggings or tights or wind pants, mittens and gloves.

30-39° : Long sleeved tee top and athletic stretch tee shirt, tights and shorts, socks or mittens or gloves, and hat over ears.

20-29°:   Women's athletic jacket, another long sleeve top layer, tights and workout shorts, mittens or gloves, and hat over ears.

10-19 °:  Long sleeve jacket with hoodie,  full cover athletic stretch long sleeve top, brushed finished tights, brushed finished sports bra and shorts, wind suit (top and pants), thick mitten, thick hat over ears.

0-9°:  Long sleeve jacket with hoodie, layered with quilted lightweight athletic vest, full cover athletic stretch long-sleeve top, ankle length brushed leggings, and shorts. Gore-Tex or similar thickness warm-up, gloves and thick mittens, ski mask and hat over ears, and Vaseline covering any exposed skin. Remember to add layers as needed. Shop for the warmest clothing which is thin. Watch your feet. Wear thermal socks, or ones which heat up - do your research on other innovations. Use the combination of layers which works best for your body temperature.
